Decorative Bird Houses Adorn Many Homes

By Amanda Baird

People often struggle trying to find that perfect gift for the new homeowner. When you have a friend or family member who just moved into a new home or just purchased a new home, it is common to give a housewarming gift upon your first visit. People often do not think of something like this, but decorative bird houses make a very stylish and fun gift.

The bird house has certainly come a long way since they were just a wooden box on a post in the front or back yard. People today are going the extra mile to decorate their bird houses and some people you could say, are even taking it to the extreme. Making scale replicas of their own homes or of famous homes of celebrities or government officials has become quite popular also.

The look and style of these birdhouses are sometimes something to behold. Just like when people go all out with their Christmas decorations, the same could be said of those who design extravagant birdhouses. For those who believe this is more than just a hobby they put a lot of time and money into these projects and they often mean the world to them.

In some places they even hold conventions and contests for these creations. In addition there is no shortage of both online and offline stores that sell the materials, custom kits, and anything else you would need to build one. Or you could go the do it yourself route and purchase supplies from the local hardware store or lumber yard.

There are even competitions and conventions in some areas where people who make and sell these gather together. They give seminars and lessons in some places and even sell some of the more unique creations that have been built. Some people just go there and sell their designs or even kits they put together that contains everything a person would need.

Of course something like that is taking it to the extreme some might say. But if you are giving it as a gift for someone you you are really fond of then money is no object. You will have to plan far ahead however because making something unique like this can take time and you want to be prepared for just how long.

The type and style that you decide upon must also fit the environment. You will not want one that might have a problem standing up to the elements such as saltwater or heavy rain. You have to remember that in most if not all cases these are made from wood. They must be treated properly with certain chemicals to protect them from the weather.

Decorative bird houses have come a long way since the first one resembled a small doghouse on a post. They hand from trees, posts, and sometimes rest on top of something else. There are multi-level styles and various other types. There is no limit to the amount of ways these can by built.
