What comes to many peoples minds when they hear garden fountains are statues that are expertly decorated and well designed to spill out water. Most individuals think it is very difficult and costly to make a fountain. This is not right. It is easy to construct your own fountain using locally available materials at home. You can use any container that can hold water.
The basic idea behind a fountain is water spilling over to the side of a vessel and getting to a basin located below where it is pumped back up. Some of the items that you need include a shovel, a drill, metal screening, a plastic basin, garden rocks, a pair of cutting shears and a vessel. You also need to purchase a water pump and a fountain plug made out of rubber.
The first thing you should do is to decide on an appropriate container to use. Choose a vessel that will hold the water and form a good base. A good idea is a decorated urn. If you cannot find a container with a hole at the bottom use the drill to make one. It should be approximately 2 inches wide so that a water tube can fit through it.
Dig a hole that is wide and deep on the garden where you want to build your fountain. The plastic basin should fit in the hole and it should be wide enough to trap the water that will spill out. The plastic basin should be positioned in a way that the soil line is at the same height with the top of the vessel.
Place a piece of metal screening on top of the basin. It is advisable to make the screening wider than the plastic basin. Make a hole at the center of the metal screening using cutting shears. Ensure that the hole you cut is large enough to accommodate the power cord and the water tube.
Position the water pump on the floor of the water basin. Pass the power cable and the water tube through the hole on the metal screening. The screening should then be placed on top of the basin.
The fountain plug should be able to create a perfect seal. After sealing the hole place the base on the screening. Connect the power to an electrical socket to get the device working. It is good to hide the power cord behind rocks and plants. Alternatively, you can bury it a few inches below the ground.
Fill the basin as well as the receptacle with water. You can use garden rocks and stones that are colored to conceal the metal screening. If everything is set up properly the fountain should function as expected. The water should spill over to the rocks below into the basin where the pump is located. It will then be recycled. If you want to improve the appearance of your backyard it is recommendable to use garden fountains. You can create them on your own without hiring experts.
