Tips For Choosing The Best Outdoor Water Fountains For Any Yard

By Dawn Williams

Most outdoor water fountains often are not made equal. The still waters like the ones you can find in a simple birdbath, pond or a small container often provides a deep sense of peacefulness and reflection. Fountains however has something still waters fail to have; sound, movement and action. These things often help people focus their inter-mind to see what the big picture is going on all around them.

There are generally three different types of outside fountains that people purchase. The bubbling or cascading types are where the water moves up through a container and slowly runs down the sides. The spill over fountain where the water-flow generally runs out some form of spout and falls into a container or basin. The jet type where the liquid is forced up under pressure like a jet and falls in a stream to the catch basin.

There are also sub-types called disappearing fountain. This is where the water enters into the catch basin, it than spills over the outside on the ground which is generally covered up by stones and vanishes. In reality though it is flowing down to a hidden container that is under the ground after which it is pumped to very top again before it spills back down over the sides again. All 3 fountain types are easily converted to this sub-type.

One of the most versatile and generally the best suited for people's gardens is the bubbling and cascading fountain. They commonly have one fluid source located some where below the surface of the container on top. They are often made from different sized glazed pots. The liquid bubbles up to the surface before rolling over the outside edge and to a basin at the bottom. These are good for smaller places and generally make soft gurgling sounds.

With most spilling fountains the top basin is raised and a little smaller than bottom basin this makes the waterfall make more noise. You should try listening to some before deciding to purchase this type. The louder sound could be energizing for most people so they are generally best put in areas where they are conversation pieces.

A jet fountain is ideal for large spaces where sound is not blocked and can be heard from a distance. The jetting makes these fountains dramatic and inspirational to watch. There are also small simpler ones that could be put in small areas that jet small droplets creating close to the same effect.

Many of these designs have a common thread, picking which one you want boils down to personal taste. Look over the area where it will be placed and what different effects you want. There is no actual wrong style, many just seem to go better in different places than other ones.

Most good quality outdoor water fountains are something that will entertain and relax families for years. If you find you are short of cash there are many ways to build water features that often look as good or better than store bought ones. You can always search the web and find countless tutorials for building them.
