Window Cleaning Can Be Extremely Satisfying

By Jayne Rutledge

The majority of people take pride in their home, and like to keep it clean and tidy at all times. Not only does it give them a feeling of pride, they are not embarrassed when unexpected visitors arrive. It does not take long to tidy a room, do some dusting and then vacuum the carpet, and you feel so much better afterwards. However there is one part of the process we tend to ignore, and that is window cleaning.

There are many reasons why we tend to forget to wash the windows, and we can all make excuses, but the major one is that we find it difficult. It is also something that most people don't notice until they are really dirty. Then they stop the light falling into the room. The other problem is that when we do make an attempt, there is always somebody about to criticise. They are always pleased to tell you if you've left a smear on the window, but often these are only noticed when the sun is shining on that particular spot.

When it comes to washing them inside, generally it's not too difficult even if you have to stand on a stool. This is because they generally do not get very dirty, just by greasy fingerprints and general airborne dust. Most people get the outside cleaned by a contractor, especially if they live in a high-rise apartment. This can form the basis of another excuse, as people say that they don't see the point of cleaning the inside when the outside is still dirty.

The method you use to clean them depends on the material they are made from. Vinyl windows have become popular over recent years, replacing the more traditional glass variety. Some people opt for tinted windows to protect their privacy, or to stop their furniture being damaged by direct sunlight.

It is very wise to prepare thoroughly before you commence the cleaning process. It does not matter whether you are working from the outside or the inside, it's still a good idea to remove all for window dressing. When doing so, make a note of which coverings came from each of the windows.

Glass is very easy to scratch, and these marks will be highlighted on sunny days. Make sure that your choice of cleaning materials and solutions are suitable for the purpose, and do not leave very fine scratches on the pane. It is possible to make your own washing agent by using warm water, soap, vinegar and ammonia.

Vinyl windows can be a lot easier to deal with. Some are designed that they can be removed easily and cleaned on both sides. They are not so prone to scratching as the glass variety, however if you do use the wrong materials you could have a problem. It is possible to purchase specific cleaning agents and cloths specifically to avoid this problem.

Successful window cleaning relies greatly on preparation. Make sure that you have the correct materials, and the time to do the job properly. Once completed, you will see more sunlight entering your room, and have the satisfaction of a job well done.
