Growing In Small Spaces Using Scrog Technique

By Enid Hinton

Screen of Green is a well known method for growing large marijuana plants in a small space. It is also called Scrog. If you don't have enough space or you would like to get the most from your single plant, this method is the right one for you. You can control the height of your stem and make sure every piece of it has enough light. Optimal use of space and improved light penetration are just some of advantages this technique offers.

The secret is in using screen and promoting horizontal growth. Between growing and flowering periods, you should set appropriate screen just above your plants. Since the plants are still growing, the shoots will come through the holes, and you will be able to bend them on the screen and fix them in horizontal position.

You can use different materials for your mesh, for example trellis netting, chicken wire or any other material with appropriate hole pattern. The holes can be smaller or larger, as long as they are suited for their purpose. You will also need something to hold the shoots on, for example tie straps or different clips. The point is to create a flat screen of buds on the top, a nice, even canopy.

Once the growing period stops, all your flowers will be adequately lighted on the top of your mesh. Wait until the flowering cycle ends and you can harvest them. This particular method ensures better light effectiveness, height control, stem support and much better final results, even if you grow your cannabis on one really limited space.

Another technique known as SOG method aims at a continuous production. Using SOG, cuttings are promoted to flower more quickly. Screen of Green technique limits the vertical and promotes horizontal growth, maximizing production of one or more plants in a limited space, and allowing the same quantity of light to all branches and flowers.

The screen has to be very well fixed, because it will carry the weight of all your plants. This way they will be able to concentrate on flowering. Make sure to use only feminized plants at the beginning. All stems don't have to have the same height, once they reach the screen, you will bend them anyway, and they will get enough light.

Sativa strains are much better than Indica, at least if you want to use this technique. Their stems are softer, thinner and more elastic, with appropriate distance between the buds. Change the photo period to 12/12 once your flowers cover maybe sixty percent of the net. The rest of the net will be covered by flowering very soon, just continue to bend the branches.

Another thing you can do to maximize your harvest is to prune the central point of each plant while it is still very young. Experts advise to eliminate only eighty percent of the central shoot, not the entire shoot. This way you will get up to eight new branches, instead of only two, that you would get with traditional pruning.
