The Benefits Of Handmade Tomato Cages

By Kristen Baird

One common goal with all those people who opt to grow tomatoes is the need to send the east growing the fruit while at the same time maximizing on the returns they get. Growing the fruit is very easy but one thing most of them do not realize is that they need much support to harvest the most. Many therefore hence opt to go for handmade tomato cages that are much cheaper and give the fruits the much needed support.

The tomato cages are made in a vertical position. The reason for this is because when vertical they save on space since the tendrils will occupy more space that was otherwise not available. With it being in a vertical position it holds the fruit up in the air away from the ground.

Many benefits can be noted by just making them by yourself. One major is that you can make them according to the size that you wish. Those bought from the stores tend to be much smaller than what many would prefer. The smaller the cage size the less the space available for the tendrils and this directly affects the amount of fruit the plant will have.

Most farmers especially those who are in windy areas complain that their keep being blown away by the wind from time to time this affects yields they get. What most of them do not realize is that they should create a stronger base that will withstand any weather conditions. They should make the base wider than the top making it to look like a pyramid with a narrower top.

There are several plans to choose from in city Elmira, Ny. The plan varies depending on the type of material that one will choose. The materials will vary from wood, plastic pipes and wire mesh. Each with its own benefits and disadvantages too. The wood rots very easily and hence can only be used once before they rot. Wire mesh also does rust after a while but it lasts longer than the wood. Then there is the plastic pipe they are indestructible and can be used for a long time because they can withstand any weather condition.

Tomatoes that are grown vertically ripen faster especially those that are a little larger in size than the normal fruits. The fruits are also cleaner since they are off the ground and they are also of a better quality. In those areas with rodent infestations, slugs and crickets then the option for putting up a vertical cage since they keep the fruits safe.

The benefit that is worth mentioning is that the materials such as the pipes are very durable and can be used for several seasons. The material chosen is easy to work with even though one might need assistance from several people.

Do it yourself projects can be easy and a lot of fun especially if one follows the steps carefully without missing a step. One first has to measure out the size of the cage that one wants then can he or she purchase the materials. One can also look for help from an expert for just a small fee.
